[ARTICLES] Even Decades-Old Contouring Pins Can Be Safely Removed

Pins inserted during facial contouring surgery to fix the bones in place do not always need to be removed. However, many patients consider removal due to discomfort, concerns about inflammation, or personal reasons. In particular, those who had surgery more than 10–20 years ago often worry, “Has it been too long to remove them safely?” Specialists advise that the more important factor is not how much time has passed, but whether the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon. Even if the pins have fused with the bone, safe removal is possible when supported by precise analysis through 3D CT scans and a surgeon with extensive experience. The original surgeon is not required—any skilled professional can perform the procedure without issue. The pins used in contouring surgery serve to stabilize the repositioned facial bones so that they heal securely. [ARTICLE] Dr. Soonbeom Kwon of ARC Plastic Surgery Gives Lecture on Zygoma Reduction at ‘APS KOREA 2025’

Dr. Soonbeom Kwon, Chief Director of ARC Plastic Surgery Clinic, presented his research on zygoma reduction techniques at APS KOREA 2025 (Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Korea 2025), an international aesthetic plastic surgery conference held on April 19 at Seoul Dragon City. APS KOREA is Korea’s leading academic conference in aesthetic plastic surgery, held annually since 1985. It brings together plastic surgeons from Korea and abroad to share the latest insights and research findings. At this year’s event, Dr. Kwon delivered a lecture titled “Zygoma Surgery Methods Based on Facial Conditions,” drawing from his extensive experience in facial contouring. He introduced the high-L and low-L osteotomy techniques tailored to various patient cases and shared clinical outcomes of each. In his presentation, Dr. Kwon emphasized that zygoma reduction is not merely a procedure to reduce bone size, but one that requires a precise, proportional approach considering the overall balance of the face. As the zygomatic bone plays a central role in determining facial contour, excessive resection can result in an elongated or artificial appearance, making personalized surgical design essential. Dr. Kwon also highlighted the importance of thoroughly analyzing the patient’s facial bone structure, soft tissues, and zygoma morphology to refine surgical techniques. He stressed the need for surgical planning that balances both aesthetic outcomes and functional safety. Dr. Kwon continues to contribute to the advancement of plastic surgery techniques through active academic participation and research, fostering collaboration with professionals both in Korea and around the world. – Medical Today, Reporter Seongwoo Cho (ostin0284@mdtoday.co.kr)
