[ARTICLE] Square Jaw Surgery: Facial Bone Structure and Lower-Face Balance Matter More Than the Amount of Bone Reduction

A square jaw may be a concern when the lower part of the face appears wide from the front or when the angle of the jawbone below the ear is prominent from the side. This facial shape can be influenced by various factors, including not only the size and shape of the mandible, but also the development of the masseter muscles used for chewing and the amount of fat beneath the chin. Square jaw surgery is a type of facial contouring surgery that aims to improve the contour of the lower face by adjusting the shape and width of the mandible. However, the surgical outcome is not determined simply by removing a large amount of bone. It is important to determine the appropriate extent and location of bone reduction based on each individual’s skeletal structure and overall facial proportions. In particular, excessive reduction of the mandibular angle located below the ear may result in an unnatural side profile. On the other hand, reducing only the prominent area visible from the side may not ...

[ARTICLES] The Key Is Balance… Cheekbone Reduction Surgery Requires Thorough Consultation

As interest in facial contour improvement continues to grow, more people are seeking cheekbone reduction and facial contouring surgery. In particular, prominent cheekbones can create a stronger facial impression or make the face appear wider, leading to increasing demand for procedures that improve facial balance.

However, recent facial contouring trends have shifted compared to the past. While previous approaches focused primarily on reducing overall facial size, current trends place greater importance on creating natural facial lines that harmonize with each individual’s features. Rather than aggressively removing bone, there is now a preference for surgical planning that considers overall facial proportions and side profile balance.
Because cheekbone surgery directly involves the facial bones, thorough consultation and precise diagnosis before surgery are considered essential. The surgical method and osteotomy range may vary depending on factors such as the location and degree of cheekbone prominence, skin elasticity, and facial symmetry.

Dr. Kwon Soo Beom of ARC Plastic Surgery explained, “Cheekbone reduction surgery is not simply about reducing protruding bones. The important part is designing the surgery while considering the balance of the entire face. Since every patient has a different skeletal structure, it is necessary to accurately analyze each individual condition before determining the surgical approach.”
He further stated, “Facial contouring surgery is a highly delicate procedure involving areas where nerves and blood vessels are densely located, so it is important to carefully evaluate the surgeon’s experience and skill level. During consultation, it is helpful to check whether the possible surgical range, limitations, and recovery process are explained in sufficient detail.”

Recently, 3D CT technology has increasingly been used to analyze facial skeletal structures in detail and establish more precise surgical plans. This allows for more accurate prediction of cheekbone positioning and movement range while enabling personalized surgical design based on each patient’s facial structure.
Post-operative care systems are also considered an important factor. After cheekbone surgery, temporary swelling, sensory changes, or discomfort when opening the mouth may occur, making systematic recovery programs and follow-up monitoring essential. For this reason, patients are advised to consider not only the surgery itself but also the clinic’s aftercare system when choosing a hospital.
Dr. Kwon Soo Beom added, “Cheekbone reduction and facial contouring surgery can influence not only external appearance but also self-confidence. It is important to approach these procedures carefully based on sufficient consultation and accurate diagnosis.”
